Heterogeneity. This might be the best word to describe cancer, not only referring to its cell composition, but also to the variety of involved pathways. By covering a wide range of different subjects, cancer research is located at the interface of clinical medicine and fundamental research besides being one of the most relevant topics in a world of rising life expectancy. In parallel to my interest in cancer research, understanding our immune system intrigues me. And I became especially dedicated to answering questions like: How can we exploit our own immune system to fight cancer? Why start immune cells to attack our own body during autoimmune diseases? How do cancer cells try to escape the surveillance of our immune system?
