Computer science researchers are increasingly challenged by requests to integrate societal, management and policy dimensions into technologies they develop. In computer science, it is no longer just a matter of realizing what is technically possible - the societal desired matters as well. By understanding algorithmic systems as socio-technical systems rather than as a purely technical “thing” that can exist independently of its context, I educate students to understand the bigger picture in which technologies operate.
