Sebastian Bathiany
Postdoc, Climate Service Center Germany
I am a climate scientist by training and most interested in knowledge transfer, teaching and using my skills to save the climate. I studied meteorology and wrote my dissertation on the end of the "Green Sahara" at the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg. I have a 10-year long research record on the detection and analysis of climate tipping points, mostly working with climate models of different complexity. From 2014-2018 I worked at the University of Wageningen where I investigated the loss of Arctic sea ice and the patterns of changing climate variability. In a path-finding project with the Netherlands eScience Centre, I developed data-mining tools to detect and interpret abrupt climate shifts in complex climate datasets. I now work at the Climate Service Center Germany in a knowledge transfer project to help agriculture adapt to climate change. My largest enthusiasm is dedicated to all sorts of creative "edutainment" activities to teach and communicate about climate change. For example, I wrote a children's book about climate change, write articles for web platforms like my own blog klimatopist.de, participate in science slams and give public talks and courses.
