Deutsch: ---------- Aufgewachsen in Norddeutschland bin ich im Moment unter dem chilenischen Sternenhimmel zuhause und arbeite als Astronomin an der Europäischen Südsternwarte (ESO). Ursprünglich wollte ich Quantenphysikerin werden, habe das aber im Studium schnell wieder verworfen. Stattdessen war ich fasziniert von der Astronomie und davon, wie wir mit relativ einfachen Konzepten aus der Physik die Bewegungen von Sternen beschreiben können, die Millionen von Lichtjahren entfernt sind. Als Postdoktrandin an der ESO arbeite ich am Paranal-Observatorium -- eine der größten Sternwarten der Welt! Ich kann Einblicke geben, wie wir die Teleskope auf Paranal bedienen und wir in der Atacama-Wüste arbeiten und leben. Gerne erzähle ich auch mehr über Galaxien, besonders darüber welche Rolle dunkle Materie in ihrer Entwicklung spielt. English: -------- Growing up in Northern Germany, I initially decided to study physics after a summer school on quantum mechanics. At university, I, however, found that quantum physics was not my calling. Instead, I became fascinated by astronomy and how we could use relatively easy concepts from mechanics to describe the motions of stars millions of lightyears away. I am currently a postdoctoral fellow at the European Southern Observatory in Chile. I split my time between being a support astronomer at Paranal Observatory, one of the largest observatories in the world, and researching how galaxies grow and evolve. I can give you some insights into how we operate the telescopes on Paranal and how we work and live in the Atacama desert. I am also happy to chat about galaxies: how we try to understand better how they grow and evolve by interacting with other galaxies, and the role that dark matter plays in these processes.
