Joana Sarah Grah
Professional, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf
I already liked mathematics in school and I had some amazing maths teachers. Rather out of a gut feeling I decided to study mathematics at the University of Münster in Germany. After finishing my BSc and MSc I did a PhD in applied mathematics at the University of Cambridge in the UK. I worked as a research associate at The Alan Turing Institute in London for six months and at the Graz University of Technology in Austria for two and a half years. Currently, I am a scientific associate at the Heine Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (HeiCAD), Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. HeiCAD aims to promote, coordinate and publicly represent activities at the university in the fields of AI and data science. In my PhD and post-docs I worked in the fields of mathematical imaging, data science and machine learning. One aspect I really liked about my research was that I could apply theoretical methods to real-world problems, especially in the field of biomedicine, and work in interdisciplinary teams. I am passionate about science communication, equal opportunities and women encouragement.

In a video conferencing call...

...I am happy to talk about my research.

...I am happy to answer questions about university and career-related questions.

...I am happy to moderate a discussion.

...I am happy to speak to others (e.g. to journalists, museums).
