Michela Appiano
Research scientist, Rijk Zwaan
Hello! At the moment, I am working in a breeding company in the Netherlands, Rijk Zwaan. We breed for many vegetables and soft fruits. During these last 5 years, I have become an expert in lettuce! I also enjoy making amazing salads :) I studied Agronomy in Italy and then discovered the world of research when I went to UC Davis in California for my master thesis. At that time I thought that I would have enjoyed doing a PhD. And indeed I did, so much that I completed 2 PhDs, one in Italy and one in the Netherlands. During my PhDs, I studied mainly tomato plants and genes that make them susceptible to a fungal disease called powdery mildew. I miss teaching and I hope you like to ring me up from time to time because I can tell you a lot about lettuces, tomatoes and plants in general.

In a video conferencing call...

...I am happy to talk about my research.

...I am happy to answer questions about university and career-related questions.

...I am happy to moderate a discussion.

...I am happy to speak to others (e.g. to journalists, museums).
