Berthold Rimmler
PhD candidate, Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics
In school, I was always interested in physics and chemistry and after my Abitur (German A-levels), I couldn't decide on which of the two to study, so I ended up choosing materials science, which is an interdisciplinary course. I then did my Masters also in materials science in France and Germany. I liked doing research and wanted to learn more about magnetic materials and its applications, as well as get into the research landscape. So, I joined the group of Stuart Parkin at the MPI in Halle, which is one of the leading groups in the world on spintronics, which tries to go beyond the charge-based computing and data storage paradigm, by employing magnetic and otherwise exotic materials. I don't know where my path will lead me next, but for now, I'm enjoying research and answering tough questions, doing experiments and analyses as well as writing up my results and presenting them in talks and at scientific conferences. Also, I would like to talk more about my work to the general public and get a bit out of the ivory tower, hence I signed up for this website!

In a video conferencing call...

...I am happy to talk about my research.

...I am happy to answer questions about university and career-related questions.

...I am happy to moderate a discussion.

...I am happy to speak to others (e.g. to journalists, museums).
